Speaker Level
Definition
Speaker level is the output at a power amp's speaker terminals (binding posts). It is a high-current, high-voltage version of the audio signal, sized to move drivers. It is not the same as line level.
In a stereo system
Connect speaker-level outputs only to passive speakers, or to a subwoofer's speaker-level inputs when that is the intended hookup. Never connect speaker outputs to a preamp, DAC, or line-in jack. The extra voltage and current can damage the input stage.
Powered speakers expect line level unless the product explicitly lists speaker-level inputs.
Speaker cable resistance is part of the load the amp sees. Short runs of adequate gauge keep that resistance low so impedance and damping factor stay close to the spec-sheet values.
